TRUE STORY: Last year my mother slipped and fell at home that resulted in a critical hip injury and required major surgery. She already had multiple comorbidities, which made the situation even more delicate. Like many children living abroad, I received the call hours after the fall. By then, kind neighbours had already rushed her to the nearest hospital, where the doctor had assessed her condition and decided on immediate surgery. Hearing such news from afar is terrifying and leaves you feeling completely helpless. This can happen to anyone. I will always be grateful to everyone who ensured my mother reached the hospital on time. After the surgery, the most crucial phase began which is post-operative care. This period demands extremely careful handling to avoid complications or infections, especially for a patient with existing medical conditions. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, I immediately contacted our partner Care and Cure Home Healthcare Service team, and their response was immediate and reassuring. There are different levels of nursing care, and I consciously chose a well-trained, registered critical care nurse, experienced in handling post-surgical patients. Such nurses are skilled in safely lifting and mobilising patients, feeding, personal hygiene, wound care, medication management, and strictly following medical instructions during recovery. As per my request, the Care & Cure team personally visited my parents’ home and handed over the nurse along with all essential post-operative care equipment, including a wheelchair with a commode. This level of responsibility and preparedness made a world of difference during a very sensitive phase. While we are naturally focused on our loved one who is unwell, it is equally important to care for the caregiver , the person who is taking our place and carrying that responsibility every single day. Families must ensure that the caregiver is properly taken care of as well, because if the caregiver fails, everything else fails with them. This is a reality every family should understand. I thank God for the wonderful caregiver assigned to us. My mother was bedridden, in pain, and not an easy patient to manage. Yet she was cared for with patience, dignity, and professionalism. Over the course of three months, my mother gradually regained her independence. On her birthday, she walked with a single walking stick for the first time. It felt nothing short of a life comeback. This post is my heartfelt thank you to the entire Care & Cure team. I must especially thank Shiju Stanly, who heads the team, for his leadership, compassion, and personal involvement throughout this journey. I can confidently refer Care & Cure to anyone in need.
